I am in Microsoft Windows XP (TM) Recovery Console.

I am facing a prompt for which Windows installation I would like to log
onto, & only having a 1 character response.

I am stuck! Can anybody help please?

Thanks

Number 1 represents your WinXP OS. Just select or type in 1 and Tap
enter.

Many thanks.

I am now at a
C:\WINDOWS>
prompt, & I expected an automatic process. Any idea how to progress?
Appreciate your input.

Well, you're in the Recovery Console, and what you see is what you should
expect from it. It is not automated. You must issue commands from the
keyboard.

How you progress depends of course on what you wished to do. Unfortunately
you don't seem to have mentioned what that is, so it's harder to provide
advice.

Were you by chance hoping to do a Repair Install? If so, you've just gone
into the wrong part of Setup.

Were you trying to REPAIR your xp installation (by reinstalling over it
from the master CD, while keeping the existing user accounts and data)?

The XP CD's Setup screen is very misleading, it says press R to enter
Recovery Console, ENTER to install XP. Many people instinctively press R.

However, to REPAIR you must press ENTER to get to the second screen - at
that point it will find an exisiting xp installation and THEN it offers
you the chance to REPAIR the existing installation, or install fresh.

Note that if you do a REPAIR then the version of XP will revert to
whatever is on that CD - you WILL need to reinstall service pack 2 and
all the hotfixes all over again to bring it back up to date.
