Dan

Recently my motherboard fried. I've replaced it with an
upgraded model. Now Windows is corrupt and I need to get
to the Recovery Console. I do this by booting from the
Win XP cd. In the console it asks for an admin pw. I
use the pw I have always used and it is rejected. I
believe this is a known issue.

I need to recover windows on this hard drive. There is
tons of GB worth of data I need. Is there a way around
the admin pw in the recovery console? Is there another
way to get this data off the hard drive onto, say, my
laptop without windows working in it?

Thanks in advance, and feel free to email me if you have
a solution (or of course post it here)

To recover the data, slave the hard drive in a different machine. The
laptop will not be useful for this, so either borrow a friend's
computer or take your machine to a good local computer repair shop (not
a BestBuy or CompUSA type of store) and have them rescue your data.

Good luck,

Malke

Hi Dan!
You'll find help at http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

Wow!!

Thanks for the link. Easy to follow and I am now able to
access the recovery console without issues :)

Which brings me to my first issue:

When windows tries to boot, it brings me to a black
screen saying:

"windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please reinstall a copy of the above driver."

How do I install this file from the Windows cd in the
recovery console?

Thanks a bunch!!!!

If you are booting the CD, taking R, assume the password needed is
blank, and TAB over to give Enter
