Recovering Windows 2000 AD

Hi all,

Recently C drive on one of my server wouldn't allow me to run Defrag
saying there is an error. Thinking that chkdsk/f would sovle the
problem, i scheduled to do that and restarted the server.

Since that the server wouldn't function at all. When restarted it would
go to starting up Windows 2000 black screen then screen Windows 2000
logo came up afterwards (normally applying network settings and
computer settings message box came up) nothing comes up and stay in the
blue screen instead.

I initially thought chkdsk/f was doing the job but then hard disks were
not flashing at all. Even then I left it running for 3 nights and no
imporvement at all. I suspected it must be to do with error on C drive.

I have got the recent back up of the server - system state and data
back up. Is there way to put everything back please? Can anyone let me
know the procedure of doing that please? (Do i format the drives? Do I
have to reinstall everything?)

Many thanks
Tin

Try booting into Safe Mode, then run ntbackup to restore the
System State.

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply. Tried with Safe mode (with command prompt &
networking) also last known good configuration, debugging mode...but
when the system booting get to the stage I mentioned earlier, it
wouldn't move forward...it would just hang in there.... I suspected the
C drive which has the OS is having a problem.... Is it a good idea to
format and install the OS and restore or is there other alternative??

Many thanks

If this was my machine then I would restore the most recent
set of registry files from their backup location on the hard
disk. I have a scheduled job that creates them once every
week. This would take less than half an hour.

I suspect you do not have such a backup process. If so then
you have to load an auxiliary version of Windows into a folder
other than c:\Windows, followed by running ntbackup to
restore your System State from backup.

If you do not wish to do this then you have to reload your
system from scratch. This would be a good time to plan for
your next disaster and actually ***test*** your recovery plan.
