Recovering data from a Disk 1, Dynamic, unreadable

Hello

I have a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 120GB ATA 133 hard drive which I cannot
read. To try to read the data on the disk I attached the disk to my Windows
XP machine and booted up. I do not see the disk in Explorer. If I look in
Disk management (Control Panel... Admin icon, Computer management, Disk
Management) I see this:

Disk 1 (with a red cross)
Dynamic
Unreadable

What can I do to recover this data?

What tools can I use?

Ideally I don't want to pay 100's of dollars to a data recovery company
(although if I have to maybe).

Hi Angus,

What happened to it initially that you are trying to recover data from it?

Look for someone with Arconis Recovery Expert bootable CD
or Bart's PE-Builder bootable CD
or Winternals ERD commander bootable CD

Hi,

Have you run the disk checker on it? What did it report?
