Recover lost files

A friend of mine has lost some files. She can't remember deleting them at
all. I told her to use Norton system works 2003 which has an unerase wizard
that might find it. It didn't. I got her to download a trial version of
"recovermyfiles" just to find out if the files were there. It so happens the
program found them. Unfortunately the trial version won't recover them and
it costs about 80 dollars for the program. Does anyone know of a free
utility that will do this job?
