XP lost files

Help! My sister is in rural China, only two westerners in the city. XP kept
crashing. A local guru 'fixed' her laptop. Unfortunately she now has all the
old files, etc of the previous user and no apparent access to her own data.
The language barrier is keeping her from explaining to the 'guru' what
happened. She's about three hours away from Wuhan. Does anyone know of
someone in China who knows a bit about XP and can help her communicate with
the local 'guru'? At this point, she'd be glad to get back to where she was
so she can do a workaround backup on her files before pursuing the XP crash
problem further. She has lost months of documents.
thanks

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I don't mean 'lost access' in the ownership sense, I
mean that the files have 'disappeared'. She downloaded/ran a recovery scan
utility and it found one of her files. Because of communication, location,
options like working from another laptop, downloading disk, etc, aren't
options. XP restore didn't help - oldest date offered was after the 'fix'.

Might this be a case for using Remote Assistance?

I wish. I'm more pc-savvy than she is and I have a lot of questions after
looking at this link. Also she's in a rural area of China where connectivity
is unreliable at best and the language is a huge barrier. This is why I'm
hoping to find a Chinese/English speaker to bridge the gap between her and
the local 'fixit' man.
It is a good site though, thanks for pointing it out. I hope I don't have
occasion to need it, but I'm glad I know it's there because I travel a bit
myself.

What I had in mind was get perhaps a computer repair shop local to you
to look at your sister's machine using Remote Assistance. This would
overcome the language issue. You may still have a connectivity issue but
you might quickly establish how much of a problem this is.
