Recording LPs to hard drive

I have done this. It wasn't that hard but is VERY time
consuming. There is a tick though. You can't hook a
turntable directly to the sound card. You have to either
go through an amp, or I had an old small pre-amp from
Radio Shack. (Not sure if they still make them anymore)
I used thed sound recorder that came with my Sound Blaster
card to capture the tracks out to a wav file. If you use
an amp, you will need to get a special cable. This you
can pick up from radio shack. You need to get the
standard left/right audio connectors to (I think) it's
called a mini din. The small connector to the line in on
your sound card. Good luck.

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with Sound Blaster Live!
Value, with WMP 9. Is it possible to record my old vinyl
LPs through my soundcard onto my hard drive? I would like
to be able to burn those onto CDs.

Believe it or not, Radio Shack still has pre-amps or Mini Amps.....and it's
a Y connector. I don't think it's a DIN.

So question for you Gerry.....how many times did you have to pass the sylus
over the vinyl before you got good results? I am contemplating doing this
in the future, but I was going to copy them to tape first. All my cassettes
are converted to CD. What did you use for a scratch/pop filter?

Question for Gerry: You mentioned the sound recorder that came with your sound card. Is that the sound recorder in the Windows accessories? Because that only gives me 60 seconds on my computer. Does the sound card itself have a sound recorder?

Have you ever used a turntable with a built-in pre-amp like the one sony
makes. I tried going through my old pioneer tuner/receiver that had a
pre-amp with very little success, but that was like 5-8 yeares ago and i
don't thik that the sound card I was using was up to the task. I could listen
but not record. I am getting ready to try it againwith the sony turntable
which actually was reasonably priced at $125 american at best buy. I just
got a new creative audigy 2 sound card so I am hopeful. I also bought
Plus!Superpack for $20 American. I hate, well maybe not hate, roxio but I'm
just frustrated with it and am also going to try nero but I have version 5
and don't know if it's any good. If anyone has any info on how to
incorporate this mess with wmp ver.10 i would appreciate an answer. I have
over 500 albums but I don't want to do all of them.....only the ones that are
definitely out of print and not available on cd.
Could you hook the pre-amped turntable directly to the sound card? please
help me. thanks in advance

Yes, the Sony can be plugged directly into the line-input of the Audigy 2,
using appropriate stereo connection cables, and should work just fine. I
have absolutely zero experience with Plus!Superpack or Nero and so, am
unable to comment on your choice of software. What I do know that will
definitely work is something called "Audacity".

I personally use a more sophisticated suite of audio editing tools, but
Audacity is free, open source, contains no spyware and is more than adequate
for purposes of confirming feasibility, while costing you absolutely
nothing; also includes basic filters and plugins for cleaning up audio noise
issues, etc...

good luck,
