Recording from an old turntable.

Hi,

Before I get to wasting time adapting jacks and plugs, I'd like to know
if plugging the output from an unamplified turntable into the mic
receptical on my sound card will work at recording from a vinyl record?

Or, should I plan that I'll need to run the turntable through an
amplifier first before going into the sound card?

Thanks!

For most turntables with magnetic phono cartridges, the
answer is no. The routing is from the phono cartridge through
a phono pre-amplier that will also equalize the sound and then
a via hi-level line output (e.g., line out, pre-amp out, tape
out etc.) to the line input of the sound card.

Even if you somehow had a surviving ceramic cartridge, which would have a
sufficiently high output to avoid using a preamp, you';d be stuck with the
"equalization" inherent in the cartridge, which is to say, only
approximately what you might be used to hearing. You do need to pass it
through a preamp, at the least.

Hi again,

I was of the thinking there would have to be a signal of some sort
pushing from the turntable, this all confirms it. Just nice to hope for
the easiest route first.

Thanks!
