Printer/software/installs/uninstalls/etc.

Hi,

I'm looking into fixing a friend of mines printer problems. When I got
there there were several attempts they had already made at reinstalling
the software for the printer. Using control panel/add remove hardware
you can delete the multipal printer entries, but they don't really go
away. The icons stay names copy 2, copy 3 etc. Going into hardware
manager there are no printers listed. Trying to print anything at all
gives the message along the lines of "choose the printer you want to
use", then after choosing one I'm told it has been deleted, Reboot
doesn't fix the problem or remove any of the false installs listed in
control panel/printers. The printer seems to be corded well in a working
USB hole, but the find new hardware never senses a new printer found,
maybe because it thinks there are already a half dozen or so of them
already installed, even though none of them work.

Any ideas out ther as to what might be causing these symptoms, or better
yet, how to work things back into health

Thanks!

1st,uninstall all of its software-dont restart,go to search in my computer,
type in all relivent for it and delete all results (be creative in
search).Then
go to run, type:regedit In regedit expand:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,software,
R.click on relivent to the printer, delete.Close when thru, next
expand:HKEY_LOCAL
_USER,software,do the same, close out regedit when thru. After, power off
computer,move the plug-in to another usb connection,start computer.Here's
the trick on new install,as xp finds the hardware, install cd for it,dont
let xp
install window close untill youve installed software, its installing
drivers,once
software is installed, close out xp utility, remove cd,restart computer.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the info! I'll give it a runthough in the next day or so and
post back here what happens. I hadn't thought about deleting the
remnants of the printer folders then going into the registry and blowing
things away in there too.

Thanks again!
