I have Nero Startsmart and I have tried a couple of times to create a dvd from an AVI file.
It does work, however, it takes me about 11 hours... Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong?
At the moment I have to leave my PC on through the night and when I come down in the morning, it has finished.

Its a bit of a pain in the arse....

Cheers

Need to know the specs of your PC really - what all the bits are.

Has it always been slow rendering video or did it start getting slower recently?

what are your computer specs? video encoding is a CPU intensive process so it all depends on your system

No. I believe that this is a different matter.
I believe that the slow pc is due to the amount of unecessary programs running, ie. Divx etc.... which is hidden !

this is down to you having a pretty old system, the only way to make it faster would be to buy a new system

ideally one with atleast 2 cores

mm 11 hours seems very long perhaps 5-7 hours would have been understandable

I'm surprised that system makes a successful render at all.

As others have said, your system is not strong enough to encode video quickly.

Minimum spec for doing that is actually 1.6Ghz and 512Mb but as ever the more the merrier.

I use a single core AMD2 2.6Ghz 2Gb RAM system to decode video. One hour of captured footage takes about 30 minutes to render, sometimes less.

My old Athalon 1.4 used to take about 5 hours to recode a 700 Mb avi file . Gave good results bot oh so slow and a real pain if you had to start again .
