Recording a Narration for PowerPoint

I have a 13 slide presentation - using PP 2003, the first
four slides allow and play the recorded narration. Slide
5 forward doesn't. The recording is embedded (not linked)
to the presentation. We are totally stumped as to how to
coordinate the sound to the slide.
 
Is the recorded narration just one sound file, or is it a series of
smaller ones? (When I do narration here, it's a series of smaller files,
but I thought I'd double-check with you on that.)

What do you have specified in the settings if you click the narration in
the custom animation task pane and select Effect options?
