Greetings

I am about to purchase a 2nd hard drive.
Any recommendations on the Western Digital Caviar 160 GB UDMA100 ?

WD is a good drive, but you may want to look at Seagate's warranty. It is 5
years.

LOL, JAX

Maxtor makes excellent reliable hard drives so does Seagate. Western Digital
I have no experience to cite-sorry.

All are of similar quality. If you have a specific model, a quick
search through the vendor's forum pages for that model might
turn up some useful insights and opinions.

Remember, in this day and age, harddrives are commodity items. All will
eventually fail, not if, but when. Check your Credit Card terms and
conditions, some offer 2 to 3 years extended (beyond mannufacturer) warrany.

Hello Martin,

I have 4 WD hard drives, all over 4 years old, and they are working
perfectly fine. They have been reformatted countless times and they still
function flawlessly. They are the only drives that I buy.

Well, reformatting will not wear out a drive. I'm glad you have had good
luck with your drives, but how many hours a week do they run and how
many power cycles a week do the drives experience? - RM

WD make good drives. Seagate is probably the best brand. Stay away
from Maxtor.

Seagate are probably the best drives for your money. They now also offer a
five year warranty. WD are good drives, but only a good deal if they are on
sale.
Stay away from Maxtor...they generate too much heat and their failure rate
is much higher than either Seagate or Maxtor.
Also stay away from IBM drives, as well as generic white box and store brand
drives.

Hello Rick,

My computers are always on, perhaps I reboot once a week if that.

Hi Bobby
I'm in the UK and the Seagate has a 2 year warranty while the WD has 3
The Seagate is only slightly dearer for similar specs
160 GB with 8 Mb buffer
