I visited the update center and installed saeveral updates.
One of them changed the way my computer boots [requires a
click on the user nmame rather than starting right up] it
also changed the opening screen of Ctrl-Alt-Del so that I
have to click a tab to get to the task manager rather than
starting that right up.
Two questions:
Can I load the update and then remove these unwanted extra
steps? How?
If not, does anyone know which of the updates makes this
change so I can just not download that particular update?

Hi,

A result of installing the .net framework. This should fix it:

Start/run "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes).

Uncheck the box requiring a username and password, click apply/ok and follow
the prompts to set up a default logon.

As to task manager, simply enable the "welcome" screen in the control
panel/users/"change the way....".
