Recent purchase of Win 2000 from Ebay

Guest

I purchased Win 2K from an Ebay seller. It came in a cellophane package with
what looks like an authentic book, license and original hologram CD. When
loaded onto P3 733 computer, about 20 popups regarding registry cleaning
appear. This was prior to loading an ISP. What could be the problem here?
Want to know how to make sure this copy is legal also. Thanks.

Sounds to me like you connected an unprotected Windows 2000 to the
internet. There is no saying what kind of virus and spyware you might
have gotten infected with so I think you should wipe everything clean
and start again from scratch.

DO NOT connect the unpatched computer to the internet without a properly
configured firewall! As installed Windows 2000 is EXTREMELY vulnerable
to worms and virus if not properly protected. These are what I would
consider as bare minimum on a new Windows 2000 installation:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4/default.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/server/evaluation/news/bulletins/rollup.mspx

You should also upgrade Internet Explorer to version 6 SP1:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.mspx

You should download and burn these large items to cd before you start.
If you feel that you have taken the necessary security measures but are
still receiving "Messenger Spam" then see here:

These popups concerning registry cleaning occurred immediately after
installation of Win 2K. No ISP was installed until 2 days later. Also, I
have heard that there is a place on Microsoft's site where you can check the
validity of Windows installations. Do you have the link for that?

I am not aware of any Chinese characters except one of the popups offering
it. This was purchased from a guy in California. Had an American name. He
said this was an original OEM installation.

If this was a clean installation, ie deleted any existing partitions,
created new ones, formated & installed win2k, and these popups appeared
*before* you installed any apps or connected to the internet then it sounds
suspicially like a cloned / hacked cd.
ie not a legitimate MS copy

Thank you for your reply. Come to think about it, this might not have been a
clean installation. It was installed over Win 98 because when I tried to
install it several times, the message "NTLDR is missing" came up. Someone
told me to install Win 98, then Win 2k over it.

I checked the last link that John John sent me to validate my copy of Win 2k
and it seems to be genuine. However, I did make copies of my Win 2k CD as I
do all software I purchase.

You might want to ensure you can obtain win2k drivers for your hw first. Do
NOT use winupdate for drivers.
-----------------------
To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

(Note: If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want
to boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom (or setup disks). Then *F6* very early and
very important (at setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent
drive controller detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then
later you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000
driver for your drive controller in drive "A")

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows 2000 Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply SP4 and these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network. Internet included. (sasser, msblast)

Thanks you for your excellent reply. I downloaded the rollup OK so it has
been verified that my copy is genuine. This software checks before it allows
you to download. I will follow these directions and see how it goes. Thanks
again.
