Receiving email at multiple locations

Rick Altman

I have Outlook 2003 configured with a POP server and receive email there
without incident. I also have a Blackberry and an iPod Touch, both
configured to receive email from the same account.

Despite the fact that Outlook is instructed to leave mail on the server (via
the Advanced tab in More Options), when Outlook is open, my two mobile
devices do not receive email, except in the lucky circumstance of them
happening to check for mail before Outlook does. Why is this happening? How
can I get all three locations to get along? Is the only solution to
configure Outlook as an IMAP server? I would rather not do that.

Thanks for the help...

Because you've configured Outlook to delete the messages from the server after
downloading them. Open your account properties and, on the Advanced tab,
select the option to leave messages on the server.

I wish it were that simple. In the Advanced tab, I show the following:

CHECKED: Leave a copy of messages on the server
Remove from server after 5 days
UNCHECKED: Remove from server when deleted from Deleted Items

And yet when Outlook downloads mail first, no other device will download it.

Did you log into the server via a web browser to make sure the messages remain
in the mailbox? Are you using gmail perchance?

Yes, the messages are still on the server, and no, this is not a gmail
account. Private domain with a standard POP server.

It could be the server. Gmail, for example, keeps an internal record of which
items have been downloaded and won't download them again even if another
client connects. Perhaps your server does something similar.
