rebooting problem

I have been having problems with rebooting. When I choose
"reboot" from the "start" button, I get locked into a loop
as the computer reboots... it keeps going back to a page
that says windows encountered a problem, and offers me the
choices of "safe mode" "safe mode with command prompt"
"last known good configuration" "start windows normally".
However, no matter which choice I make, it loops back to
the same screen. I have to go thru this cycle a half dozen
times, and then manually turn off the computer and restart
it..
