Reboot with machine check exemption

Recently build ASUS system using AMD Dual Core Processor.
System has been working fine for a month.
I weekly exchange an IDE drive with another for backup purposes (this is a
cage IDE drive in a casing not a hot swap drive). I shut the system off and
reboot with no problems, I can read an write, but if I check the disk for
errors with Administrator->Computer Maintainance->Hard Drive, or if I start
Acronis True Image the system gives a hang with "machine check exemption"

Interestingly 2 other drives do not give me this problem.
I've taken the drive out, reformatted and ran Western Digitals checkdisk
including Smart Drive, it says the drive is fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

The "machine check exception" error message is decipherable.
What is the entire contents of the error message?

Part of the info is:

Stop: 0.0000009c

Does that help?

No. All that signifies is a "machine check error". What
is the rest of the information?
