Realtek Onboard Sound

This problem has almost driven me to drink. Did a fresh install on what
will be my HTPC last night. Everything is working fine with the exception
of the sound. Everything appears ok on the computer but there is no sound
at all coming out, I get no errors when try to play music as I have had in
the past when there was a problem with the sound being installed. The sound
manager program will even detect that I have the speakers plugged in. Here
are the measures I have taken so far:

1. Verified with another device the speakers I am using actually work.
2. Try both head phones and speakers with the onboard sound..
3. Verify the speakers are plugged into the correct plugin.
4. Made sure the onboard audio is on 'auto' in the bios.
5. Select both analog and digital in the sound manager program(could not
select analog only as I have no option to). This had been a problem before
on a different computer with a Sound Blaster Audigy
6. Downloaded and installed the most up to date drivers from Realtek.
7. Ran through windows troubleshooter with no problems coming up(no
conflicts, no drivers problems, the device is selected, etc) When I check
in device manager it says everything is working fine.

Any suggestestion? The only other thing I can think of would be to turn off
the front panel audio but the motherboard is supposed to support that

Did you try downloading and installing the audio drivers
from the support web site of the manufacturer of your
motherboard?

1. Open XP's "Help and Support Center".
2. In the Search box type: TROUBLESHOOTER , and hit enter.
3. Click on "Sound Troubleshooter".

Yes I downloaded from both Gigabyte and from Realtek. I did also try the
sound troubleshooter as well. I will try the link and see if it has any
good ideas.

Just to clarify I downloaded from gigabyte as they are the motherboard
manufacturer.

Make sure the Windows Audio service is running:

1. Go to Start > Run and type: SERVICES.MSC , and hit enter.
2. Scroll down to WINDOWS AUDIO.
3. Right-click on this service and select Properites.
4. Set the Startup type to Automatic.
5. Afterward, Start the service.

Tried that. The service was on automatic and already running.

Are you absolutely sure you have the speaker jack connected
to the right port?

Yes. In troubleshooting I have tried all three ports with no solution. I
also double checked against the sound manager which has a diagram in it.

Do you have the speaker showing in the taskbar near the clock? I had a
similar problem with the sound and I had to expand the sndvol32 file off the
the OS cd because it had failed. After I had done that it worked fine.

Yes I do have it. When I double click on it I get the volume control and of
course nothing is muted.

Open the Sound Efects Manager (AC97 Audio Configuration) from controll
panel. Select Jack sense/UAJ. Click Start button on bootom to scan the
Jacks. If that does not work, try using the Manual Selection button. This
may or may not work.

Tried that as well. It has no problem detecting the speakers.

Took a serious look at how much more time I wanted to waste on this problem.
Took an old sound card out of sone of my other pc's and put it in. Work no
problem with the existing drivers on my computer. This will be a great
solution until I need that PCI slot!

You may just have a flaky motherboard in re the OB sound

Another thing to try - go into the BIOS and DISABLE the onboard sound.
Reboot. Reboot and enter BIOS and ENABLE the onboard sound. Reboot.
