RealPlayer Again!

Hi all,

Forgive the redundance, but I have browsed the posts about real audio player,
how it engrains itself into the bowels of your system so it is hard to remove,
and about a possible freeware alternate, (alternate realplayer?).

I came across a radio station that only lets you listen to archived shows with
realplayer: Can you install the freeware version of RealPlayer and
successfully remove it ALL, if you track the installation with Totalinstall?

Where is the alternative that will play RealPlayer streaming sound, and what
if any are its limits.

Thanks a lot (p.s., the story, `Abbey' was on early July on independenteye and
was about a man's bonding with a cat).

Not sure about any "limitations", I've been able to use Real Alternative on
sites that have real media content without any difficulties.

Quick Time Alternative is also available from the same site and again, it
appears to work fine with .mov files.

The free version of Jet Audio plays four different types of Real Media
files- I'm not sure which if any of them is the streaming audio format
though: http://www.jetaudio.com/products/jetaudio/features_01.html

Alas ... Jet Audio, like soooo many other claimants, also first requires
that the genuine codecs for REAL media must be already installed in
order for any streaming REAL media to be decoded and read. You
do that *only* by installing one of the myriad RealPlayer versions ...
OR by way of RealAlternative or RealAtLast, both of which installs
the bonafide needed codecs, but not the insidious RealPlayer itself.
The latter two are not products of or sanctioned by Real, Inc.

Sadly True.

For me, Jet Audio is the worst of the alternatives because of the DRM bot it
installs - without warning you during installation - and the encrypted
connections it effects during updates.

And if you look through the registry after installing Real Alternative, you
see the same registry content that you see after installing RealPlayer;
including the "rotuma" entry which is the unique identifier (which can be zeroed out).

RealAlternative seems the best of the bunch from the DRM Spyware
perspective, but as you intimate, it may be chargeable as some sort of crime (theft?) if
you are ever unfortunate enough to have your computer impounded for any reason.
Users subject predatory Law Enforcement need to have VERY clean and honest
computers; for which reason I, sadly, removed RA and installed RealPlayer.

Spying is probably accomplished today through multiple means: the use of
cookies, rotuma, and RDNS - as more and more streamers subscribe to cable,
which increasingly uses a permanent IPA. Only way to avoid that is to shut
off cookies (registry entry), zero out the rotuma, and use some sort of
anonymizing service that will block the offbeat ports opened by Real/RA/JA/etc.
