Really... really slow boot

I have had Windows XP running for about two years or so. But recently I found that when doing a power-on boot, my computer is taking a really LOOOOONG time to finish its boot cycle. By really long I mean 5 minutes and some seconds by the clock every single time. After about 1 min 45 seconds the desktop screen, (With icons and wallpaper) is displayed, but it takes another almost 4 minutes before the Windows sound is heard

This has been going on for about 4 months. At first I thought it was just a normal really slow windows boot, but I am now thinking that during the boot, windows is looking for some file that is not there and is going thru a cycle where it just has to time out before continuing. Problem is I can't find what it is looking for. Or even if I am right or wrong.

Any help to fix this really...really slow boot time

Does it also take that long if you boot XP to Safe Mode?
I guess it must be alot of spyware and/or virus in your computer.

It could be Symantec Event Manager, part of the Norton anti virus
and/or internet security utilities. There is a file, ccevtmgr.exe,
that could be holding things up. The offending version was part of a
Norton update some time ago.

On my new computer, a 3.2GHz machine, the delay after desktop appears,
but before full functionality and the Windows theme, was about 90
seconds. With a slower machine it would be longer.

Symantec has a fix on their site but it is a bit hard to find. I had
the same problem at 1.0.5.2 version of ccevtmgr.exe so I downloaded
1.0.3.4 from their web site and it fixed my problem. They're fairly
specific about the procedure to replace the file.

This is where I found it (long link - if it wraps you'll have to copy
& paste to browser in pieces):

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...Document&prod=&ver=&src=sg&pcode=&svy=&csm=no

If that doesn't work, just search Symantec Support (All Knowledge
Bases) for "slow startup" and the article is at the top of the list.
