Hey, it's my second night of class tonight and the only
bit of homework we had was to find out what the heck "CE"
stands for in WindowsCE. I can't find it anywhere... does
anyone out there know what it stands for? Thanks!

It stands for Compact Edition. It runs in a diskless environment. It also no
longer exists. IIRC, MS Marketing renamed it Windows Mobile or somethin'
similar.
BTW, next time...Google for the homework answers. Think of the sense of
accomplishment you'll have! <G>

According to 'Ask Jeeves'
"From the mouth of Mr. Gates, via the Microsoft Windows
CE website, the CE in Windows CE "doesn't represent a
single concept, but rather implies a number of Windows CE
design precepts, including "Compact, Connectable,
Compatible, and Companion." This is probably the
straightest answer Microsoft has ever given."
Not sure how true this is !!!

While Microsoft claims the CE does not represent any
particular meaning, it has been said that it stands for
Consumer Electronics (for the devices CE targets) or
Compact Edition. When you are really frustrated with a
particular problem or shortcoming you can refer to it as
Windows CE (Crippled Edition). I also like Caveat Emptor.

Q. What are the differences between the Windows
Embedded operating systems?

A. In general terms, Windows CE .NET is a
customizable, real-time operating system used to rapidly
build the next generation of smart, connected,
small-footprint devices. Windows CE .NET can run on multiple
central processing units (CPUs) and is used in a broad range
of device types including: mobile handhelds, thin clients,
gateways, IP telephones, and automated industrial devices.

Based on the above, I guess it stands for Customizable
Embedded

I thought it was now MS Pocket PC 200*? My iPaq with Pocket PC still shows
Windows CE 3.0 in the Asset area though, so no matter how they label it, it
still 'exists'!! ;o)
