While setting up the tools area in windows defender, the "understanding real
time protection" link errors and I can't go look at what this means to help
me decide what is going on in the 'real time protection' settings.
Do I need all of them checked?
some of them?
None of them?

you should have them all checked unless you are having a problem with WD.
You can view any errors that WD makes in the Event Viewer.
You can find Event Viewer in Control Panel Administrative Tools in both
Vista and XP. In Vista it is easier to put Control Panel in Classic View to
find the Event Viewer.

The link is to the help file.

Fwiw, I have everything in the first group of options selected, skip the
next two, and "always" for the icon.
