If you're using Roxio CD Creator 5, and it's a version earlier than 5.35, it
isn't fully Windows XP compatible, you have to download a free patch from
the Roxio web site to update to version 5.35. As for Real Player, I don't
know much about AOL proprietary software, but I do know that MSN will not
run if you uninstall MSN messenger, and makes you reinstall it before it
will function. Perhaps AOL comes with a plug-in module for Real Player.
So, if you don't have a version of CD Creator that's at least 5.35, download
and install the upgrade patch from the Support/Software Updates section of
the Roxio web site, where it says:
This web update is designed to update Easy CD Creator 5.x.x Platinum to
version 5.3.5. It can be installed in Windows NT, 98, 2000, ME, and XP. This
update will install Windows XP specific drivers and make the necessary
registry entries to allow Easy CD Creator to operate correctly in Windows
XP.
OR:
This web update is designed to update English versions of Easy CD Creator
Basic 5.x.x to version 5.3.5. It can be installed in Windows NT, 98, 2000,
ME, and XP. It has a number of fixes and adds new drive support, including
support for DVD -R/RW and DVD +R/RW. This update will install Windows XP
specific drivers and make the necessary registry entries to allow Easy CD
Creator to operate correctly in Windows XP.
Depending upon whether you have CD Creator Platinum, or CD Creator Basic,
select which update applies to the software that you have.
I'd assume that if Real Player came with AOL, that you should be able to do
a repair install of AOL and get back what you uninstalled. If AOL doesn't
allow a repair install, then it's suckier than I thought.
It's also possible that your system came bundled with Real Player, and the
problem has nothing to do with AOL, but that when you uninstalled Real
Player, it wasn't a clean uninstall, and in that case there might be an
orphan registry entry that looks for a Real Player update each time you
connect. If the error message isn't an AOL error message, then that could
be the problem. Then the fix would be to look through the CDs that came
with your system and find the one with Real Player on it and reinstall it.
If you can't find the CD, then go to:
http://www.real.com/player/?src=realplayer
and click on the yellow link in the upper right hand corner where it says:
FREE RealPlayer. (Don't click on the orange button where it says Free
Download, because that's a 14 day demo). You don't want the demo, you want
the free version from the yellow link in the upper right hand corner of the
page.
I'd try reinstalling RealPlayer before messing with the AOL software.
