Ready to uninstall Vista... BSOD hell

I agree that it's a software problem. I remind you that Vista is a piece of
software. My fundamental anger is that if two HUGE organisations like
Microsoft and HP/Compaq can't get their act together enough so that a brand
new computer will run in a manner reliable enough for production use, then
there's not much hope left.

I've been a Microsoft fan ever since the first IBM-PC came out with MS-DOS
(yes, I'm that old). Until now I've always derided the claims of the Apple
fanatics. But now... I'm thinking that if the same company makes both
hardware and operating system then it's likely they might have gotten it
right and there's only one company to blame.

I'm a pretty computer-literate person (been involved in multimedia since
those days of the Apple II and IBM-PC Mark 1), but I'm unable to resolve this
problem. What then, for the hordes of average users who just want a reliable
computer but don't know much about its innards?

I agree that these types of problems are frustrating beyond belief. I might
suggest that you attempt a clean install, except I'm pretty sure you didn't
get a Vista install DVD with your system, probably just the restore DVD,
which, unfortunately, will just put all the crapware and, possibly, lame
drivers back on your box. I've done clean installs on all my boxes and I
really think that has a lot to do with why I haven't had any problems, other
than those that can be attributed directly to Vista, e.g., file copies. Does
HP offer "real" Vista OS install DVD's at a nominal price? If not, I'd bitch
like all get out.

I wish I had an answer for you, I really do. Vista works great here. And I'm
not saying that to pour salt on your wounds, believe me.

And I agree with the question, paraphrased here, "How are "regular" users
going to deal with such issues when experienced users can't figure them
out?" No clue. I'd be mad as hell too, myself.

As to moving to Macs... the only comment I'd have regarding that, other than
the significant cost difference for hardware, is that most geeks are going
to want to upgrade to the latest and greatest OS. From what I've read in the
Mac forums on the Apple site, that happens approximately once a year to the
tune of approximately $120. So over a five year span, the Mac geek, assuming
they don't buy a new box with OS included, is going to drop around $500 on
OS upgrades. To say nothing of the cost of buying software for the Mac,
although I suppose one could run Windows on a Mac instead of OS/X. But why
buy a Mac to run Windows? I wouldn't. I mean I wouldn't run Windows on a
Mac. Not saying there's anything wrong with that... just doesn't make a lot
of sense to me. Blah, blah, blah... LOL!

Girrlkitty:

Just realised that I've cross-posted to your discussion thread on the
Mozilla forums.

I haven't yet uninstalled Vista (though it's going to happen, believe me, as
soon as I get time).

But I am starting to get the feeling that maybe Firefox triggers the BSOD
problem. But on the other hand, I spend a lot of time in Firefox, so maybe
it's a coincidence.

Best of luck!

Regards,

David
