Although it could have been here before, have just noticed that under
WinXP SP2 that when one right clicks on a folder, and goes to properties,
a greyed out check mark is seen in the "read only" box. This occurs even
when all of the files under it do not have a check in read only, or even
when a folder contains no files. Is this right?

Miles

It could inherit the properties from parent folder. Did you check properties
of parent folder ?

Yes, it's actually in an indeterminate state. The read only attribute
on a folder, for the most part, means nothing in XP SP2. The folders
are always open for writing.

Yes it is by design. Nothing to worry about.

Miles, it is normal, and does not apply to the contents of the file.
There have been some long and agonized discussions of this here, but the
bottom line is that it can be ignored.

You're looking at a "three-state" checkbox in its third state. The
states are checked, unchecked, and not applicable. It's trying to tell
you that the "read-only" attribute doesn't exist for folders. (Judging
by posts to this group, it doesn't do a very good job at communicating
that information.)

Thanks everyone for the info; now I can relax and forget about it -- was
worried that it was one more item that SP2 had screwed up that I just
spent two weeks sorting it out, and hopefully now it's over!
