read only folder/file

I recently bought a JVC Everio HDD camcorder. I recorded some movies and put
them on my computer (XP Home, SP2) into a folder on my desktop. I opened
Windows Movie Maker and when to the import menu. I selected the folder but
none of the movie files were visible.

I then got out of movie maker and right clicked on the folder, went to
properties, and saw that it said "read only." Well, I unchecked the box
for read only and clicked apply. I then right clicked properties again, and
the
box was still marked as read only.

I experimented with this and found that any folder I make starts as read
only, and stays that way.

I would like to know how to fix this. Any assistance is helpful.

Thanks in advance.

The read-only attribute for a folder is typically ignored by Windows. Every
single folder on my systems have the read-only attribute set.

If you look closely you will actually see it's not read only. It's in an
indeterminate state. Folders are always open for access by windows. See
this link.

You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of Folders
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326549/en-us

It reads, in part:

"Unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only attribute for a
folder is typically ignored by Windows, Windows components and accessories,
and other programs."

if the movie files are in a format the movie maker does not understand they do not show.
in the import windows at the bottom there wound be a drop down list available to change the file types to look for. set it to ALL.
