Read-Only Problem

Hi, I have copied some files and folders from my old hard disk to my new hard
disk, both running on Windows XP (before and now).

So one day, I opened one of the documents and edited part of it. When I
tried to save the changes, it prompts me that the file is Read-Only and I can
only choose the Save As option. After saving the file as a new file, I tried
deleting the old file, but couldn't do it. Then, I discovered that almost all
of the files have the same problem.

I went to each file, right click on it, and look at its properties. But the
file is not Read Only. But when I right check on the properties of the folder
that contains the files, the Read Only checkbox is grayed. But no matter how
hard I tried unchecking it, using administrator's account, using normal user
account, it will still go back to grayed.

What can I check?

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. Under ownership, I can choose either Administrator
or Administrators only. I can't choose the real user who created the files.
Even if I choose Administrator as the owner, I logged in as the
Administrator, I still couldn't change the Read-Only property.

Hi,

Sorry, what I meant was, even after taking the ownership, I still couldn't
change the Read-Only property.

Hi,

ok, check then if there is your user (currently logged) on permission list
and check if he has full control over files.

hi,
Try "start"=>"run"
Input"regedit".
Then check "\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorerhg weather there is "NoFileAssociate"
If so ,delete it.
Restart you system.
I hope it helps.

If you mean the read only box for the folder, the reason that you can't
change is that this property does not apply to folders. All folders on my
machines have this box greyed, but I can still do whatever I wish with the
files in the folder, and I can still delete a folder if I so wish.

Yes, I gave him full control, it didn't work. I even passed the ownership to
him, it also didn't work.
