Read Only Folder Problems

B

Brian Graham

I recently bot a laptop with Vista Home Premium and networked it to my
desktop which runs XP. I can access all my files on the desktop from the
laptop but when I try to save changes I have made I get an error message
saying the file is "Read Only". Indeed when I use my Laptop to access the
same files the folders containing them are marked "Read Only" but I can make
changes to the files and save them. Can anyone suggest how I can (1) get my
files unmarked "Read Only" and (2) make and save changes from my laptop?

The status of the Read-only box on the General page of the folder's properties
sheet has nothing to do with this issue.

On your XP PC, right click the folder you're trying to access and select
Properties from the menu.
Click on the Sharing tab.

If you're running XP Home Edition or XP Professional with the default settings
for Simple File Sharing enabled, you should see a section titled Network sharing
and security. Both boxes in this section, Share this folder on the network and
Allow network users to change my files, should be checked. Take a look at this
article for more info.

If you're running XP Professional and have disabled Simple File Sharing make
sure the appropriate users/groups are listed in the box and have Modify
permissions. Take a look at this web site for more info.

Good luck
