Reading newsgroup messages in Outlook

P

pat mccoy

I just recently (hopefully) configured my Outlook Express to read messages
posted in the newsgroups after being told by one of the MVP's that the way i
was posting was clunky and error-ridden. I was posting my messages through
my AOL account. Anyway....I posted a message yesterday and i can't seem to
find it. I was wondering if there was a way to read ALL the messages in any
certain newsgroup. I can get the newsgroup to come up via Outlook but it
only goes back as far as the past 2 or 3 days. I was looking for a message
that i had posted about 2 weeks ago and i guess the only way I'd be able to
find it is to go through AOL again. Is there any way to read all the posts
in a newsgroup via Outlook as i find them interesting to read. I have
learned a lot of good tips in here thanx to you guys & gals!! Keep up the
good work and any help here would be appreciated........Thanx ......Patty

Hi, Patty.

Two main points:

1. Outlook Express is NOT the same program as Outlook, in spite of the
confusingly similar names. :>( Outlook (whether Outlook 97, Outlook XP or
any other variation) cannot read newsgroup posts; it can be set to call on
Outlook Express to do that job. Because of the similar names, please ALWAYS
say Outlook EXPRESS (or OE or OE6) to clarify that you are not asking about
Outlook. Otherwise, we get awfully confused.

2. In OE, click Tools | Options... | Read and check the "Get ___ headers at
a time" setting. By default, this is set to 300, which is certainly not
adequate for a busy newsgroup like this one, which gets nearly 40,000 posts
per month, or over 1,000 per day. You can change this 300 to any number you
want, up to 1,000. Or, you can UNcheck the box and get ALL the headers on
the server - just be prepared for a long wait for a busy group, even if you
have broadband!

You can customize OE6 in many ways to fit your own usage and preferences.
Most of the customizations are through that Tools | Options... path. On the
Maintenance tab is a setting for how long to keep messages before deleting
them. Perhaps your settings are to delete them after only a couple of days.

Oh, one more: Click View | Current View | Show replies to my messages.
Then OE6 will hide all messages except for those in Conversations (we
old-timers still call them "Threads") with posts by you.

It's issues like yours and the braodcasting of your e:mail address and so on that makes me not use OE as a news reader. Not to mention that OE is old and outdated and quite a horrible mail program in general. I use the IE to view posts and if you want to retrieve your posts then simply use the "Search" function at the top of the page. Welcome to the eXPeriance. {:~)

OE can only display messages currently on the newsserver you're using.
Instead of using [Verizon's?] newsserver, try using the MS newsserver to
access this and other MS newsgroups. No subscription or passwords, posts
appear in minutes and messages are kept available for 30+ days.

Is (e-mail address removed) not your E-mail address? If it is, *you*,
using the web-based interface, are broadacsting it, and I, using
OE, am not broadcasting mine.

No newsreader requires you to broadcast your correct E-mail
address, and neither does the web-based interface. It's all a
matter of how you configure it.

Not to mention

How good OE is as a mail program is irrelevent to how good it is
as a newsreader.

There are many newsreaders available. OE is only one choice, and
almost every newsreader has its own partisans. Although I
personally prefer OE, which is the best choice for any individual
depends on how he works and what features are important to him.

I use the IE to view posts and if you want to retrieve your
posts then simply use the "Search" function at the top of the
page.

But almost without exception, *everybody* with any experience at
all agrees that the worst possible way to participate in
newsgroups is via a web-based interface.

I want to apologize for sending you an e-mail. I thought that when i hit
"reply" it would reply in the newsgroup but specifically to your
post...........ooops........Sorry!! Thanx for taking the time to read it
anyway. I really appreciate it!! The first thing i will do tomorrow is to
format my newsgroups to post via microsoft rather than verizon. As
always........keep up the good work and i hope i did this right this
time..........Thanx again.........Patty

Hi, Patty.

Yep, this time it came to the newsgroup, NOT to my email. ;<)

Of course, you will still dial into Verizon's server to reach the Internet,
and you can still use Verizon's news server to access the 100,000+ Usenet
newsgroups that are not on the MS public server. But just click here:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

and OE will automatically create an Account on the MS server for you and
subscribe you to this single NG. Later, you can flesh out your "barebones"
account and subscribe to additional NGs on each server.
