Is the card using formatted using FAT16 or FAT32 such that the computer can read it ?

Maybe the phone uses a proprietary formatting scheme.

when i check in properties it says the file format is RAW. if i chose to
format the card it gives me the option to format it in FAT or FAT32 but it
says the capacity is only 232 mb when the card is actually 512?!?!

If you format the card, can the phone now store data on it ?

i haven't tried it. i don't want to damage my card or lose half its memory
capacity

You will only lose what's on the card, not damage it.

If you format it on the computer and the phone can't read it, have the phone format it.

You really should be getting support from the phone manufacturer.
Did you READ the manual ? RTFM !
You haven't even posted the manufacturer and model of the phone.

i did it, but as i thought i did lose memory on the card. when i formatted it
on pc it went from 512mb to 232mb. i could use it in phone though. i then
reformatted it in my phone and my pc now says its needs formatting. i need to
decide whats more important to me, more memory or using my card reader. i
think i'll go for the memory cause at least i can still transfer between the
two via usb. thanks very much for your help. much appreciated. ken

It proves that the phone uses FATxx formats and a proprietary formatting scheme.
To be comptible for both the computer and the phone, you need to format by the computer
using FATxx.
