reading CD-R

I had a Compaq pc windows 98, cd burner CeQuadrat, which
i gave to my daughter. Before giving it to her, i copied
all my files - data, music, pics, about 17 cd's
altogether. I got a new Compaq windows xp. The cd drive
always gives me the message "insert a cd into drive D"
when a cd is already in there. In the meantime my
daughter upgraded to windows xp, so there is no more
windows 98. My new Compaq plays store-bought music cd's
and dvd's. How can i get to my files? THANKS, Carol

Did you format these CDs and drag and drop the files to the CD. If yes,
then these CDs were made with packet writing software, something XP does not
natively support. If that is the case, you need to install an appropriate
compatible application. If CeQuadrat has a Packet Writing component, check
their web site for a version compatible with XP, install it and you should
be able to read your disks.

NOTE: do not assume your current version is compatible with XP. Almost all
CD writing software needed to be updated for XP, especially the packet
writing component.
