READ THIS - SOLVED AUTOPLAY, CD-ROM UNABLE TO READ CDS, AND REMOVABLE USB DEVICE ISSUES

I think this message will help a lot of you
I started having problems with autoplay on my cd-roms only working intermittently. A second problem showed itself when I bought a removable usb pen drive - device manager showed it was working, but the drive would not appear in Windows Explorer or My Computer. After installing Norton Antivirus 2004, a third problem occurred - my cd-roms were recognized by my computer, but they could no longer read ANY cd put in them

I searched all the knowledge bases and had all the latest XP SP1 updates and fixes - but nothing worked

Then a guy named "ziggy" on here suggested I uninstall NERO cd utilities. I went one step further and uninstalled both NERO and ROXIO Easy CD creator. The problem remained. But after uninstalling these, I ran a program called Registry First Aid. You would not believe the crud these programs left behind!!!! Registry First Aid recognized over 106 problems - most of which were related to the NERO

I was a bit reckless, and rather than investigating each issue Registry First Aid had with my system, I told it to just fix everything. I wouldn't recommend this, but I was fed up - and the program is pretty smart.

To my delight ALL THREE PROBLEMS MENTIONED ABOVE WENT AWAY!!! My computer is running like a champ. I believe the problem was NERO since most of the registry issues were with this. However, I plan on installing the latest Roxio - and see if any of the problems come back

Hope this helps some of you!

Nero makes utilities to clean up the registry.

I think this message will help a lot of you.

It's certainly interesting...
I started having problems with autoplay on my cd-roms only working intermittently.
A second problem showed itself when I bought a removable usb pen drive - device
manager showed it was working, but the drive would not appear in Windows Explorer
or My Computer. After installing Norton Antivirus 2004, a third problem occurred - my
cd-roms were recognized by my computer, but they could no longer read ANY cd
Then a guy named "ziggy" on here suggested I uninstall NERO cd utilities. I went
one step further and uninstalled both NERO and ROXIO Easy CD creator.

Having both installed at once is quite likely to be a problem - this
is a class of app that plays fast and loose with the hardware at a low
level (especially the related resident packet-writing apps, which are
DirectCD and InCD respectively) and may ASSume it is the only
application that is playing with the hardware.
The problem remained. But after uninstalling these, I ran a program called Registry
First Aid. You would not believe the crud these programs left behind!!!! Registry
First Aid recognized over 106 problems - most of which were related to the NERO.

What was the history?
Specifically, which was installed first, Nero or Roxio?
To my delight ALL THREE PROBLEMS MENTIONED ABOVE WENT AWAY!!!
My computer is running like a champ. I believe the problem was NERO since
most of the registry issues were with this.

Having used a lot of Nero and not seen this problem pattern, I'd be
more inclined to suspect a "too many cooks" Nero vs. Roxio problem (a
situation I have always avoided by never installing both at the same
time). I've had more problems with Adaptec/Roxio, and significantly
these have often sprawled beyond the scope of writing CDs, e.g.
causing hard lockups when USB devices are activated (specifically,
when a memory card is inserted into a USB SanDisk reader).
However, I plan on installing the latest Roxio - and see if any of the
problems come back.

Good luck :)
Hope this helps some of you!

It is, thanks!
