READ THIS - SOLVED AUTOPLAY, CD-ROM UNABLE TO READ CDS, AND REMOVABLE USB DEVICE ISSUES

I think this message will help a lot of you.
I started having problems with autoplay on my cd-roms only working intermittently. A second problem showed itself when I bought a removable usb pen drive - device manager showed it was working, but the drive would not appear in Windows Explorer or My Computer. After installing Norton Antivirus 2004, a third problem occurred - my cd-roms were recognized by my computer, but they could no longer read ANY cd put in them.

I searched all the knowledge bases and had all the latest XP SP1 updates and fixes - but nothing worked.

Then a guy named "ziggy" on here suggested I uninstall NERO cd utilities. I went one step further and uninstalled both NERO and ROXIO Easy CD creator. The problem remained. But after uninstalling these, I ran a program called Registry First Aid. You would not believe the crud these programs left behind!!!! Registry First Aid recognized over 106 problems - most of which were related to the NERO.

I was a bit reckless, and rather than investigating each issue Registry First Aid had with my system, I told it to just fix everything. I wouldn't recommend this, but I was fed up - and the program is pretty smart.

To my delight ALL THREE PROBLEMS MENTIONED ABOVE WENT AWAY!!! My computer is running like a champ. I believe the problem was NERO since most of the registry issues were with this. However, I plan on installing the latest Roxio - and see if any of the problems come back.

Hope this helps some of you!

Thanks for the info but, I have Nero on my XP machine, with no problems. I
have used the product for a number of years. Obviously, you had a registry
problem but, I think it was a problem with corruption, rather than Nero
itself.

No, I'm not an Ahead employee.

Cheers, JAX

What you have said may be true. The deal is (and I forgot to mention) I ran a registry fix with the program prior to uninstalling Roxio and Nero - with no luck - and then ran it after the uninstall...with success. Now it could have been a conflict with Norton AV 2004 or something else as well. You are right though, I should not speculate on what I do not know...in the future I will just print the facts.

Hi Mark,

I pressed the send button and then thought of something I should have added;
IMHO, you were lucky, I have found, to my chagrin, that many of the
"registry fixers" will really screw-up your system if you choose to let it
automatically "fix" the registry.

The best, JAX
