when I writa a word document to a CD-RW why does it only
appesr as read only, can I change this so I can work on
the document

That's the nature of how CD drives work. If you want to work on the document, copy it to your hard drive first, remove the read-only attribute, make your changes and then write the file back to CD

Because all CD disks are read only. Copy the document from the
CD to your hard drive, then change the attributes to work with the
file.
