Read Error on Excel Files

M

Matt Stone

Using Excel 2000 (XP/2000) and i am having a problem accessing one of my
files. On opening it presents an error message saying the following:

filename.xls cannot be accessed. The file may be read only, or you may be
trying to access a read-only location. Or , the server the document is
stored on may not be responding.

If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

Thanks
Matt.

Hi Matt,
In Windows Explorer (or MyComputer) try renaming the file - make sure to add
the XLS extension
Now use Excel to open it.
This has worked for me in the past.

Just one file, not others?

Are you trying to open from a floppy?

If so, copy it first to your HD then open from there.

Do you get that problem when you double click in windows explorer or when you do
a File|open (within excel)?

If it opens ok via File|Open, then you could try reregistering excel:

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.
