PAssword protected file will not open

Hi all.

I have an excel 2003 document that cannot seem to open. I know the password
is right but when I put the password in, I get a message that says:

''Divers.xls' cannot be accessed. The file may be read only, or you may be
trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored
on may not be responding'

I'm trying to open the file from a USB drive, but I get the same error even
if I copy it to the desktop and try to open it. There are other password
protected .xls files on the drive and they open fine. Please help.

Have you looked at the file properties, using Windows Explorer? Is the
read-only attribute set?

If you opened and save on a USB flash drive it might be that the file is
corrupt, that happened quite often with files opened and saved on floppies
due to the way Excel creates temp files etc. One thing you might want to try
is to download open office and try to open it using that program

Open office worked great. Opened it up no problem. Removed password and it
re-opened in Excel just fine.

Thank you very much for the help.

I do not have an option of removing the password protectioin, it must stay on
the file. I cannot even get to the screen where it will let me enter a
password.

Hi,

Maybe you can try to recover the excel file. There is a tool called
Advanced Excel Repair. I have used it to repair many corrupt Excel xls
files successfully. Its homepage is http://www.datanumen.com/aer/ Hope
this helps.

I am having a similar problem, but I never saved the file on a usb drive. I
have 2 password protected excel 2007 files that decided as of today, they
won't open. I don't know why and I don't know how to fix it. They are very
important files. I understand the problem is not that the file is corrupt
but something to do with the user authorization?
