Re-Posted - Unable to collect updates

Keith Archer

Apologies for the re-post to the top of the list, but I'm
not getting anywhere with my problem of being unable to
download the updates for MSAS.

Latest definitions 5683 update is available, but still
unable to pick it up.

BILL - There are no reports of any denied access or
connection failures coming from the firewall. As a test I
installed Zone Alarm Pro on a system and watched what it
did as I updated - the only thing that happened is that
GianAntiSpywareMain.exe requested outgoing access to port
80 to www.giantcompany.com (216.32.240.26). No other
program attempted access to anything else.

I've run out of ideas and suggestions. Except one - I'll
take a laptop off the network and will attempt a direct
connection to the internet via modem dial up and see if
that picks up the update. I'll leave this open for a few
minutes while I run off and try it......

..... Yep - it works OK if I dial up rather than connect
to the internet via the company LAN.

This is definately a problem with accessing the update
site through a firewall. I'll top post the question again.

Anyone else have any idea why I cannot collect automatic
or manual updates for the product through a corporate
network and firewall system - all port 80 and 443 (HTTP
and HTTPS) traffic is fully allowed in.

Thanks in advance,

Keith

Uneducated guess, but is it perhaps trying to use the ftp protocol?
Perhaps ftp is blocked at your firewall.

You are assuming Zone Alarm is not making a mistake. When you opened port 443 to outgoing, it worked.

Hi Mark,

I started off with absolutely no program permissions
given and blocked all Zones for Zone Alarm Pro, and all
check boxes checked for all notifications. This way I
assumed that any and every program would cause ZA to pop
up a warning.

Starting up and denying access to the program showed what
was attempting to connect and to where. Of course the
MSAS objected that it could not connect to the Internet.
I then re-started the update process and this time
allowed the program GiantAntiSpywareMain.exe access to
the Internet, and watched what happened next - only the
HTTP request to the www.giantcompany.com site. No update
happended, and I got the standard "up to date" message.

I did the same on a laptop, disconnected from the
corporate network, and dialled up to an ISP by modem, and
performed the same again, to find that the update came in
this time, complete with advice notices on screen.

I'm puzzled.

I would not expect to see a beta 1 workaround for this bug, beyond dropping the firewall. Nor would I be surprised to see a manual
download of the update made available for those without control over firewall settings. Bata 2 will hopefully have some improvements
there.

FWIW, I believe Keith Archer has control over firewall settings, but no
advice yet posted by Microsoft give him the information he needs to make
this facility work with his firewall.
