Re-Installing XP Home / Service Packs on a desktop

Hi Guys,

I have had to re-install Win XP Home onto a new HD as my previous HD failed.
After many issues I finally have XP Home installed, however the version
supplied by the PC Manufacturer pre dates any Service Packs, so these were
originally installed when they were released by Microsoft.

Now when I come to re-install XP Home I have to install the service pack. I
tried SP2 and it crashed the PC completly... I called the Manufacturer who
helped with re install and suggested updating drivers for Motherboard, Video
Card and Sound Card, and then to install SP2 via the Windows Update site.
Would you guys recommend this? I only ask I am so concerned that I may end up
having to continually re-install XP Home.

At this time I have installed Office and a printer, but nothing else.

Cheers, and sorry for such a long post. ( and sorry for any spelling
mistakes )

I would follow the manufacturer's suggestion. It doesn't seem likely that
installing SP2 first would hurt much.

Before you connect the computer to the internet, make sure that you have
anti-virus software and a firewall installed. If you don't take this
precaution, you are asking for trouble.

Thanks Jim,

I did previously install SP2 but it totally crashed the PC, so as neither
SP1 or SP2 are installed, does SP2 overwrite the software or is it an
additional update?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am having lots of issues with this PC.

Such as?

I am not sure, as it has previously worked, untill the HD failed, and it
needed replacing...

Service Pack 2 has Service Pack 1 in it. Try installing Service pack 2
before you install any programs and applications.

Dave B.

Could be anything, bad hard drive (new or not), bad ram, motherboard, CPU,
power supply.
When XP misbehaves that badly on a fresh install, it can usually be traced
to a hardware problem or BIOS setting.

Cheers Dave B,

my only concern is that XP worked fine untill SP2 was installed, and since
re-installation (without SP2, it continues to work fine) , that would
logically believe me to assume that SP2 is causing the problem..

SP2 includes all of SP1. However, the update only replaces those parts of
SP1 that need replacement. It really takes about the same time to install
SP2 as SP1.

If you are having hardware problems other than the replacement disk, it is
time to run diagnostics. Do this testing before bothering with any software
update.
