Re-installing Windows XP??

G

Guest

I recently (about a week ago) upgraded my Dell laptop from Windows ME to
Windows XP Home. I'm satisfied with the operating system (for the most part)
but my computer has NO space on it, barely 1 GB left. I think I want to
completely uninstall everything and reinstall just Windows XP, then go back
later and re-install all my programs. (I think this is called clean
install??)

Can anyone tell me
a.) how to do this properly so that I won't regret it
b.) how to properly back-up anything I need
c.) if Windows XP will let me reinstall since I already registered my copy
and it says it can only be installed on one computer. I will be
re-installing it on the same computer but will I be able to use the same
serial number twice is my concern...?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Before you do that, find out WHY you don't have any space left. I'm sure
that XP takes up more space than ME, and that's probably part of it. But I
suspect that if you look around, you will probably find some temporary files
and directories that can be deleted to free up space. Look at C:\temp and
c:\windows\temp and c:\winnt\temp, whichever ones exist.

You can also try using a 3rd party tool called "Treesize" which is good
for seeing how much data is sitting on your hard drive in whatever folders.
You can find this tool @ http://www.jam-software.com/treesize/

I hope this helps.

Hey SummerStarzLindz,

A clean installation is when you format (wipe it clean of all data) a
harddrive (or partition) and then install the operating system in that same
location.

a) Clean Install Windows XP

b) You can use NTBACKUP which is located @ START -->ALL PROGRAMS
-->ACCESSORIES --> SYSTEM TOOLS--> BACKUP. With this, you can back up all
your profile files and system files. Just follow along with the wizard on
what you want. Also, if you have a 2nd partition on your laptop, you can
copy your data over to that as well.

c) Yes, you can reinstall Windows XP back on that same computer. Since the
hardware is still the same, you can use that same serial number as before.

You should start of with Gabahey's suggestion first. See if you have files
you can delete. I believe Windows XP has a DISK CLEANUP TOOL that may also
help you.
