A "friend" istalled XP on my computer 2 years ago, and I want to flush
everything I have, including Windows, and start fresh.

I have purchased a legit version of XP, and need help gutting my computer,
and starting over.

Please help. I know nothing about computers.

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if necessary to
accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean installation (delete the
existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

or here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

if i'm not mistaken, you can use your new cd and use the repair installation
feature. It will ask you for the new product key and that way you can
maintain your currently installed windows.

If you choose to simply start anew, then be sure to copy your doc's, pics,
etc.... because they will be wiped away too......
