Re-installing on a multi partition system.

B

Ben

Hi, I'm considering re-installing Windows XP as my registry seems to have
many errors-I'm getting corrupt icons etc. I currently have 3 Windows
Partitions-one for Windows itself, one for my applications (this is where
'Program Files' is) and one for my data.
My question is, would it be better to delete the data in all 3 and then
re-install, or can I keep the data in my applications and data partitions?
Is it better to do an 'upgrade/repair' install, and will this be better for
my multi-partition system i.e. is Windows-install intelligent enough to
build the registry with the different drive letters included?
All the problems with my registry originated from the partitioning process,
since obviously the drive letters got mucked up!

Hi Ben,

Do a repair installation, no need for a clean install, it will have the same
effect.

Follow these steps to do a repair install which should preserve your data,
settings, and programs:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from
the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you want
to
repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.

Note that you will need your Product Key for this procedure, so have it
handy before you begin.
