Hi All,

Having formatted then re - installed XP Pro, I have found my network to be
somewhat troublesome.

I can ping my router, other 'puters in the workgroup and connect to the
internet via the router however
when I attempt to connect to the other 'puters in the workgroup and see
their shares, I am met with the
wonderful '....Home is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

When attempting to repair the connection I receive the following:
'The following steps of the repair operation failed - Purging the DNS
resolver cache.
Please contact your network admin or ISP'.

Any help would appreciated..

Thanks,

Neil

Hi Neil,

Thanks for your posting here.

As you mentioned that you can pint the other computers but you cannot
access the shares on the other computers.

Based on my experiences, this issue can occur when you have the Trend Micro
OfficeScan Corporate Edition anti-virus program installed on the computer.
If so, please download the update to the OfficeScan scanning engine
(TmFilter.sys) from Trend Micro.

http://www.antivirus.com/corporate/contact_us.htm

If the problem still persists, please let me know the following information.

What is the operation system running on the other computer?
Does the problem only occur on this Windows XP computer? Can you access the
networks shares from another computer?
Do you enable the guest account on the target computers?

In addition, I recommend that you use msconfig.exe to disable Startup Group
and Third party services on the Windows XP computer. What is the result?

Thanks Bob,

I think I have isolated the problem to the DNS client service in Win XP Pro
not running....
If I change the Log On for this service from NT Authority/Network Service to
'Local System Account'
and start the service, everything works fine.

Attempting to run the service under NT Authority/Network Service results in
an error message,
Could not start the DNS client service on local computer. Error 5:Access is
denied.
It requests a password, what password should I use ??

Other puters on the network are set up to run under NT Authority/Network
Service.

Regards,

Neil

Hi Neil,

Thanks for your update.

The problem can occur if the permission is not set properly in the system.
I recommend that you refer to the following article to reset the security
settings.

313222 HOW TO: Reset Security Settings Back to the Defaults
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=313222

If the problem still persists, please try the following steps:
1. Open My Computer and right click on your drive C: and click
Properties.(Here I assume your Windows XP system is installed in the drive
C)
2. Click the Security tab. Make sure "System" listed in there with full
control permission.
If the System account is not there, please click Add and type in "System"
(without quotation marks) and click OK. Select "Full Control" for the
system account.
3. Restart your computer and test to see if the problem is resolved.

Have a nice day!

Hi All,

Whilst the help has been great, I found a simple answer to the original
problem.

When using the laptop at work, I use a USB keyboard.

When I took the laptop home one night I changed the password without
realising that
num lock was on, caused by the USB keyboard.

Effectively instead of typing an 'm' the laptop saw my keystroke as a '0'.

Hence when trying to gain access via a networked login, my password was
being rejected.

Thank you all for your assistance.
