My Quickbooks program could not recognize IE6 even though it was installed
and working. Quickbooks tech help said uninstall IE 6 and reinstall since it
would not reinstall (IE6 that is ) from the Q B installation disc. IE 6 is
integral to Quickbooks. Got it uninstalled and cleaned reg entries and now I
can's reinstall IE 6 either from a file or directly from MS Help please

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378
Make sure your anti-virus is turned off.
The section
Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet
Explorer 6
works on earlier versions of Windows.
If you are using WinXP SP2 you will have to uninstall that first.

Thanks Frank,
I've managed to reinstall IE 6 and it almost works?? It will run with
manual start but none of the programs that would normally start it
automatically can recognize it. ie WIndows Help and Support, Quickbooks etc.
I have tried reinstalling direct from MS but get the error that there is a
more newer version already installed and setup closes.
Current version is 6.0.2800.1106
I did unistall WinXP SP2 and not reinstalled it yet.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Hi Frank,
No luck. Followed your instructions. Help and support will connect now but
only with DDE box unchecked. Some headway I guess. Spent over a
hour on the phone with Quickbooks. Total waste of time. They insist it is a
problem with the System. Gettin desperate now. Is it possible that Opera or
Firefox are interfereing? Opera is set to identify itself as IE 6 but I
thought that was just to websites. Would snapshots of the reg help at all? If
so what part?
Really appreciate your help.

Hi Frank,
May have hit on something. QBWin.log shows the following:

QBW 22/01/2005 11:12:44

RegOpenKeyEx(HKLM, "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App
Paths\IEXPLORE.EXE", 0, KEY_READ) returned 0x00000002

When I follow this OpenKey in regedit, I can get to ....\App Paths... and
that's it. No listing for IEXPLORE.EXE" in App Paths.
I assume this needs to be rectified but I need gui8dance in how to do this
correctly if in fact this may be the problem.

Again, thanks for your help.

Are you expanding that subkey? (e.g. make sure that App Paths
has a [-] box beside its folder icon, not a [+] box)
Or doing a find with all of RegEdit's Find's Look at boxes checked
and Match whole strings only _unchecked_?

I assume this needs to be rectified but I need gui8dance in how to do this

Try using the Internet Properties dialog. Programs tab.
Check: Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser.

Do this using inetcpl.cpl while iexplore.exe is not an active task.
Use RegMon to monitor what changes (and what is still missing.)

Good luck
