RDP connects then blank

Two systems often fail RDP connections.

1. With one host often, not always, I get the logon box and logon and
it disappears and I get the color of the desktop but no icons and
can't do anything. It stays like that till I close the connection.

2. With another host often, not always, I get the logon box and logon
and it disappears and I just have a black screen and after a couple
minutes RDP quits. No msg about connection lost or can't connect. Just
closes.

Doesn't matter what system I use as the remote or from what location.
Have run all win updates on the hosts and updated their video drivers
just on a guess.

Once either of them start doing this I can't get them to work again
remotely until I reboot them. Both XP.

Both are XP but what SP level? What OS and SP level is the remote
host? Need more info. There are some hotfixes and updates you could
apply to fix these. Also, NIC driver fully up to date?

NIC drivers, hmm? I'll have to check.

The one that just shows me a blank desktop is fully up to date, OS,
video driver, NIC driver, etc. Any other thoughts on this one?

The other one did have a newer NIC driver available so I put that in
and I'll see if it makes any difference. It didn't show among windows
update options or just using "update driver" but going to the Broadcom
site it listed one.

Both are XP pro, and as noted, up to date, so SP3.

Thanks

Ok, here's some hotfixes / patches you can try putting on to see if
they help out, going from oldest to newest:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956072 (and registry tweak)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957264
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/963038
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972828

and, if you can find it, WindowsXP-KB972422-x86-ENU.exe which has an
updated RDP Device Redirector.

Give those a shot and let me know how it goes.

The four links each have specific conditions or symptoms that don't
apply, connecting to server 2008 or the remote host crashes, or error
msgs, etc. The other one I could not find. I thought hot fixes are in
the service packs and updates that are normal for windows? If not, is
it wise to just apply these fixes regardless if they seem to apply?

I realize that these hotfixes are not describing the conditions YOU
face but they are updated DLLs or components of RDP that might fix
your issue regardless of their specificity. These are POST SP3
hotfixes which is why I suggested you apply them.

Yes, it's a good idea to apply them even if they do not apply to your
situation. MS does update the specific files over time with fixes and
such and it is possible that over the course of a file being updated,
you issue might have gotten fixed along with it. The worst that could
happen is them doing nothing to resolve your issue. You won't know
until you try.

KB972422 isn't so important but if you want it, I can send it to you
via e-mail.

KB956072 updates the RDP Terminal Stack driver.
KB957264 updates the RDP Device redirector which applies if you're
bringing over things like printers or drive volumes to the remote
host.
KB963038 updated the RDP Display Driver which is the one I thought
would help you the most.
KB963038 updates the Terminal Servies Active X client. Not so
important but related to RDP.
KB972422 has a newer RDP Device redirector driver that the one in
KB957264.

I also forgot to mention that KB973093 has an updated version of
RDP6.1 (build 6.0.6001.22470 dated 7/16/2009) that might help but it's
not available. The one that installs with SP3 is build 6.0.6001.18000
dated 4/14/2008 so a LOT of work has gone into build 22470! I can
e-mail this to you if you'd like to give it a shot too.

I have been experimenting. The one I found a NIC update at the
Broadcom site hasn't failed for a few evenings. Time will tell if
hit's fixed.

Good to hear. Report back in a few weeks and let me know so I can
suggest it to others.
