Ratty Icons after TweakUI

My system suddenly has really ratty, low resolution icons on the desk top.

Recently I had a hard drive die so I've just gone through the process of
reloading XPHome, SP2, applications, etc. Everything restored relatively
painlessly and looked right. So I then started tweaking things back to where
I had them before the crash.

I downloaded TweakUI from Microsoft and used it to change the Shortcuts from
"Arrow" to "Light arrow" which I'd done before. Suddenly the desktop icons
also lost a whole lot of resolution in addition to going to the light arrow.
There's a very checkerboard look to them now. Unfortunately telling TweakUI
to go back to "Arrow" doesn't restore the icon resolution.

Ok, then I tried reloading the icons from the .exe file they are packed in.
Still they're presented as low resolution on the screen. Like maybe a 16x16
icon blown up to 32x32 or some such.

Investigating further I find that I can look at a 32x32 bmp file and it looks
right. When I tell XP to use it as an icon though it looks ratty on the
desktop. Apparently the problem is not that the icon data has been
corrupted, but rather than TweakUI has made the desktop only show low
resolution somehow.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any solutions?

Thanks.

Sorry -- solution found. TweakUI apparently kicked my display adapter into
16 bit mode. Restoring it to 32 bit mode cleared everything up.
