Seriously, Freeform in 2007 PP got dumber than 2003.
How can you get rid of the important feature of
holding down Shift and constraing the direction of straight lines to
multiples of 45 degrees??

I just want to draw vertical and horizontal lines!

How can you

Unfortunately, here "you" isn't MS, it's just us, and we're just PPT users like
you. But trust that some of us who beta tested PPT made sure MS knew about
this.

Turning on the grid and/or using guides might help with this.
Or it might be useful to draw lines using the line tool (which does snap to
45degree angles) then with snap to objects turned on, draw your freeform atop
the lines.
