Running XP Pro on a Dell Dimension E521 machine that was originally delivered
with Media Center. For the past several months, I am receiving a randomly
timed sound of an explosion through my speakers. I have tried returning the
audio sounds to their MS default, I have run virus programs but nothing seems
to eliminate this.
What else can I try?
(I know that it isn't a big deal, but it is frustrating!

Search the HD for a .wav file that makes that sound. See what folder it
resides in; that could be a clue to its purpose. I had a similar
happening on a machine; the extraneous noise was from the UPS software.
That warning sound could be disabled with its software.

Thanks Elmo. I tried that by searching the HD for .wav files. Of course I got
LOTS of possibles. I went through the list and could not find the one that is
sounding randomly. The closest were the "bomb" and "explosion". There were no
files showing up in strange places. I actually played all the ones that were
not listed in MS folders, like Quicken and McAfee. But no success. Any other
suggestions?

If you have MS Messeenger, AIM or the like, it could be from someone
there, I suppose.. Another sound extension is ".au". There are
possibly others, but I couldn't find a list of them. Ah, here's one.. a
long list, but only 12 common extensions:

Maybe there are ads on particular websites you visit that try to get
your attention with sounds..
