Random Shutdowns- i8042prt Suspected Cause

My computer has been randomly shutting down for the last few weeks. It is
very sporadic. Sometimes a few times a day, sometimes only once per every few
days. I have realized that before these shutdowns I see this in my event
viewer(and no other errors or warning around the time seconds before shutting
down): Warning .. i8042prt .. Event ID: 17 .. "The device sent an incorrect
response(s) following a keyboard reset." I have automatic shutdowns disabled
already, but it shuts down anyway. I notice a registry edit may help solve
this but I am not too savvy with the whole registry thing. I am on a
laptop(compaq presario) but I have an external ps/2 keyboard plugged into the
keyboard port because the keyboard on my laptop doesn't work(long story.. but
I have never had any problems as a result until now.) I have my cable modem
and a mouse plugged into my two available USB ports.

I believe I grazed past that earlier on in the day. I think I have everything
100% pin-pointed. I just need to figure out what to do from here. I don't
believe that page offered quite enough info for me to decide exactly what to
do. I don't think I trust myself enough to mess around in the BIOS without
being exactly sure what to change.

Thanks so much anyhow.

Hi

Have you still got the manual for your motherboard. There should be a
section in there about the options and how to change them for the BIOS. If
you are still not sure, is there anyone locally who could help you?
