NEED HELP USING BIOS- i8042prt problem

I've narrowed down a problem with my computer randomly shutting down to
something in regard to "i8042prt", which is an error(actually warning) that I
notice in my event viewer before every shut down.

"Warning .. i8042prt .. Event ID: 17 ..
"The device sent an incorrect
response(s) following a keyboard reset."

I need help knowing EXACTLY what I need to go into my BIOS and do, because I
really don't trust myself without being sure, and I have no money to have
somebody do it locally.

If it helps, I have a standard ps/2 keyboard plugged into the keyboard port
of my Compaq laptop. (The keyboard on my laptop doesn't work. Long story, but
it has been this way for a few years, and i've had no problems as a result.)
I have two USB ports with my cable modem and a mouse plugged into those.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I've been trying to figure out how to do this for a year or so now. Only the
keyboard I have plugged in to the keyboard port shows up in device manager.
