random reboots

My computer will randomly reboot and go to the screen that states windows had
to restart. It gives me a choice of starting in safe mode, safe mode command
prompt, normal start up, last best know config , etc... whatever I choose it
continues to go back to this same screen. If I turn the power off
completely, it then will start up normally, sometimes. Any suggestions?

First stop the automatic rebooting so you can get a Stop Error. Then you can
research the Stop Error here:

http://www.aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

That link will also show you what parts of the Stop Error you'll need to
quote exactly if you need more help with it here.

That said, random restarts are most often caused by failing hardware and/or
overheating so some hardware diagnostics would be in order.

Sorry, I forgot to tell you how to stop the automatic restarts.

Control Panel>System>Advanced tab>Startup and Recovery>Settings and under
System Failure uncheck "Automatically Restart".

you can download, install and run a program to monitor your heat and fans.
Speed Fan is a good universal such program.

over heating is a common cause for random reboots.

Thanks mikeyhsd, I have a prgram like that, Asus probe. Everything checks
out ok. I think it is a hardware issue. One of my cd drives I believe. I
took them out and I will see what happens.

That works if you can get to Control Panel. An alternative is to keep
pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure. If you are using a
wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.
